I’ll be watching the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) on Fox 6 this Saturday. I actually dread the free TV events a little. The amount of commercials they do is ridiculous. With the last FX 7 I think the commercials had more airtime than the event. They even cut into the matches, I miss seeing the corners between rounds. A year into this deal with Fox and I think it was a bad idea. Fox’s big contribution to the partnership? A desk. Is that what Mixed Martial Arts has been missing? I’m a desk jockey and I can tell you I don’t watch the UFC to see other people sitting at a desk who have nothing to do with the fights, asking each other the same cliche questions over and over. At least when the UFC does their own pay per view events they fill space with interviews, bio pieces and highlight reels. That stuff’s interesting. The worst part is the commentators. Kenny Florian knows his stuff but he needs to work on delivering it to the audience. Jon Anik is an empty suit. He has that fake upbeat radio voice that never alters, no emotion. He’d sound exactly the same if he was calling bingo numbers. He does little more than read a few facts off his laptop, which he struggles with. The long pauses mid sentence like he forgot what… he was talking about. Thankfully Rogan and Goldie will be behind the mike for Fox 6. I’m sure everyone is making more money with Fox but from a fan’s perspective, things were better before.

Demetrious Johnson versus John Dodson for the Flyweight championship. This should be a dynamic fast paced fight. I think we’ll have a new flyweight champion. Dodson is more aggressive, he’ll take the fight to Johnson.

Quinton Jackson versus Glover Teixeira. Rampage’s last fight with the UFC, I won’t be sad to see him go. He thinks he’s going to make a fortune elsewhere, but his career has been on the downward slope for a long time. Teixeira will destroy him.

Anthony Pettis versus Donald Cerrone. There may be some ring rust with Pettis coming off a long injury hiatus, but these guys always put on a good fight. Could be fight of the night.

Clay Guida versus Hatsu Hioki. Hopefully Guida remembers this is a fight and not a marathon like his last match. He used to be exciting.

What are your predictions? Who are you rooting for? Stop by after the fights and let us know what you thought of the Fox 6 event.

Watched the first episode of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) season 17. TUF is a really hit and miss show. On the plus side there’s a fight every episode. On the down side you have to put up with all the “reality” stuff which is all trash talk before the fight and crying afterwards. It gets tiresome.

One thing you can always count on is the season premier being jam packed with fights from beginning to end, non stop action with fourteen elimination matches to get on the show. Except for this season. For some reason this time they decided to bring the fighter’s families on the show, so they spent even more time focused on talking and crying. When it came time for the fights, they would show one or two highlights then cut to the coaches talking about the fight. I think we might have only seen two or three fights all the way through. I don’t know if it was the UFC or Fox that decided The Ultimate Fighter needed less fighting and more talking and crying, but it made for a boring opener.

Coaches this season are Jon Jones and Chael Sonnen. I expect Jones to win their fight at the end of the season but in the meantime they should be entertaining. Mostly because Sonnen is the pound for pound best trash talker in the UFC.

President Dana White said there’s one guy in the house that everyone is terrified of, he sends all his opponents to the hospital. I’m not sure who it is, I wasn’t able to figure it out from the elimination fights. Who do you think it is?

Plus what is your prediction for Jon Jones versus Chael Sonnen?
